    The Nature of Regret

I have long held that regret is the worst emotion that someone can experience. Regret can only proceed from personal mistakes that are perceived or actual. And once the mistake is accomplished the act can never be taken back. It leaves you with a hollow feeling in the heart and gut. What could have been or what should have been are pervasive thoughts. And though the passage of time may, perhaps, numb the atrocious feeling within, it will forever be present.

Regret begets most other negative emotions. Anger and sadness present themselves. Anger over what is done; often self-directed. The heart then mourns what can never be changed. If we are fortunate rectification will present itself, but often enough, this will not happen and can never change the past. From time to time the heart will remember.

The man who speaks little and the man whose actions are controlled is a man who will limit his experience with regret.
